PACK 39 BIKE RODEO EVENTS For safety reasons, scouts will be required to walk their bikes from one event to the next. Paths for the boys to walk will be clearly marked with cones and ropes.
BIKE DECORATIONS (Optional) – In the past this event has emphasized den themes and the decorations have gotten bigger & more time-consuming & costly each year. We changed this to an individual and optional event. If individual boys would like to decorate their bikes (and/or themselves), they are welcome to do so. Awards will be given for the following categories: Most Unique, Most Colorful, and Most Creative. We ask that the parents let the boys come up with their own ideas & decorate the bikes themselves. The decorations will be judged as the boys wait in line before and after the Slalom race, so the boys need to be able to ride & race safely with their decorations in place.
CRAZY MAZE RACE (Tigers and Wolves Event)– This event features a large maze laid out with duct tape on the basketball court. The scouts will start the maze, which begins with a wide lane, and as they progress through the maze containing several sharp turns, the lanes will progressively get narrower. The goal is for the scouts to get as far into the maze as possible without losing their balance or crossing over the marked lanes. Balance and steadiness, not speed, are the real keys to this event. Often this is won by boys on bikes with training wheels.
PONY EXPRESS (Bears and Webelos Event)– In this event the boys will take off on their bike, ride 25 feet, then stop and get off their bike to pick up the mail from a box and put it in their backpack. They will then get back on the bike and ride back to the starting line where they will drop the mail off into another box. The object is to complete the course in the shortest time possible. Scouts will be penalized 5 seconds if they drop the mail, if their bike falls over when parked, etc. Coordination, quickness, and overall good bike skills are the keys to this contest. Awards will be given to the top 3 riders in each rank.
SLALOM RACE – This event will have several cones set up and the boys must weave their bikes in and out of the cones as directed. The fastest time wins. There is a 5 second penalty for each cone knocked down or if the bike misses going between any of the cones. Quickness and good bike handling skills are the keys to winning this race. Awards will be given to the fastest 3 riders in each rank.
BIKE SAFETY and SNAIL RACE – We will have a fun event that focuses on bicycling safety. Parent volunteers will assist with the safety checks and Scouts will demonstrate their knowledge of hand signals, properly fitting helmets, and safety rules. After we talk about safety we will also see who our steadiest snail is. In the snail race, awards will be given to the slowest 3 times in each rank.
BIKE PARADE – The last riding event of our Bike Rodeo will be a Bike Parade, where each rank of Cub Scouts (Webelos II, Webelos I, Bears, Wolves, Tigers) will have a chance to ride around the oval parking lot, displaying their decorations and bike riding skills for the rest of the Pack while the parents clap wildly and takes photos. Boys will line up with their den by rank starting with Tigers. Dens will ride when called and exit the parade after one lap.
AWARDS CEREMONY – The Bike Rodeo ends with award presentations and presentation of the Bicycling Belt Loops for all new Cub Scouts.
