What a great way to start off the new year. At our first pack meeting of 2009, the pack will host its annual Air Show. At the Air Show, each scout will be given paper to construct a paper airplane that they will use to compete in various events.
Performance Events: There will be 3 performance events to compete in and blue, red, and white ribbons will be awarded based on the level of success:
- Accuracy – Shoot the Plane Through the
Hoops
There will be a line of three hula hoops suspended in the air. The objective is to get the plane to fly through as many hoops as possible. A plane that flies straight and level is needed for this one. 3 hoops – blue ribbon, 2 hoops – red ribbon, 1 hoop – white ribbon. - Distance – How Far Can Your Plane Fly?
Boys will launch their planes from one end of the cafeteria towards the other end of the cafeteria and will be awarded blue, red, and white ribbons based on how far they fly. A plane that flies high and straight will do well in this event. - Time Aloft – How Long Can Your Plane Stay
in the Air?
Boys will launch their planes from the starting point and a timer will determine how long they stay aloft. Blue, red, and white ribbons will be awarded base on the time in the air.
Design Competition: A design competition will judge airplanes on the uniqueness and complexity of design. It must also fly. Check out the web sites below to find your award winning design!
Prizes: There will be three levels of prizes this year:
- Grand prizes – 3 electric remote controlled airplanes will be awarded by raffle. To be eligible to win a Scout only needs to participate in the event.
- Design awards – 10 large gliders will be awarded to the winners of the airplane design competition.
- Every Scout will receive – at the end of the event - a nice balsa or foam airplane to be flown later (not at the event)
- Scout MUST be Present to Win - Scouts (or a parent or Den Leader if the Scout had to leave early) must be present at end during the awards ceremony to win the prizes. If a name is called and no one claims the prize, another name will be drawn.
- Early Bird Prizes - For Scouts who arrive at the event by 6:30, a drawing will be held to award 3 prizes. Be sure to enter your name when you enter the cafeteria before 6:30.
We are looking forward to a great event this year and hope everyone can make it!
