Pack 39 Cub Scout Terminology

Organizational Terms

Pack and Pack Meeting- the pack is made up of all of the dens.  Pack meetings are held once a month and are held in the Bridge Point Cafeteria.  The purpose of the pack meeting is a time for general communication, skits and songs, and a time for rank advancement and for the scouts to be recognized for their accomplishments.  These meetings are run by the Cubmaster.

Dens and Den Meeting - each scout is with a group of boys their own grade level called a den.  Dens meet approximately 2 times per month in addition to the pack meeting. This is where your scout will work on advancement and earn recognition.  All dens are given a den number and have a name chosen by the scouts. Example:  Den 7 Lava Scorpions

Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmasters -Leaders who run the Pack meetings.

Den Leader- The den leader coordinates den meetings and rank advancement  with the help of the parents.  They are responsible for attending the committee meeting once a month to ensure smooth running of their dens within the pack.

Akela-  This means “leader”or teacher.  As the parent, you are your childs Akela and will be asked to sign off on achievements and electives.  Other adults that could be Akela for your child are the den leader, a teacher or coach.

Cub Scout Ranks

Wolf  2nd Grade
Bear 3rd Grade
Webelos I 4th Grade
Webelos II 5th Grade

Bobcat- This is awarded to scout when they learn things like the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack etc.  It is earned after a scout completes his Tiger rank advancement, but before he can earn Wolf, Bear. Webelo I or Webelo II rank advancement.

Dues – The membership dues for 2005-06 are set at $100.00.  A portion of the dues is sent to National Boy Scouts of America and includes a subscription to Boy’s Life magazine for your son.  The remainder is used for awards and recognition, special event supplies for each scout, campouts, the general running of the pack and our annual Blue and Gold BBQ for the whole family.  The dues are supplemented with our annual fundraiser event when the scouts sell Popcorn.  The funds from this sale are essential to our budget so we encourage 100% participation.

Advancement Terms:

Achievements are required activities needed to advance to the next rank.  These are explained in each of the rank specific handbooks and usually there are several activities for the scout to choose from.  Achievements can be earned during den meetings or at home with the family and should be signed off in the scout book when completed.

Tiger Totem (paw print) is the recognition item that is awarded to the tiger cubs to begin their advancement trail.  As they progress, they will receive orange, white and black beads called totem beads that will signify their completion of individual achievements.

Rank Advancement occurs after all required achievements have been met and is awarded to the scout during a pack meeting where he is recognized for his accomplishments.  The scout receives a diamond shaped rank patch to be sewn on to the blue class A uniform.

Electives are extra activities within each rank that are just fun and give great experiences to the scouts.  These are located in the rank specific handbooks and are acknowledged through the den or at a pack meeting.  You may begin signing off on electives at the beginning of the school year; however, a scout must earn the proper rank advancement prior to being awarded the yellow elective beads for Tigers or the gold and silver arrow points for Wolves and Bears.

Belt Loops and Pins (also known as Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program) supplements the rank advancement program in cub scouts.  This is an optional program that gives the scouts activities to do with the den, family or pack.  There is a separate book that that will give all of the information and requirements to earn these awards and it can be purchased at the scout store.  The belt loops are actually metal loops that fit on the scouts blue belt with the name of the earned skill.  The pins require more work to earn, and they can be pinned on the red vest to show this accomplishment.
