Date: May 12, 2008, Bridge Point basketball courts, 6-8pm

Organizer:  Bill Imhoff, 809-9797,

Set-Up/Clean-Up: Den 9          Flag Ceremony: Den 11

Final Pack Meeting

Our final Pack Meeting of the school year includes an Ice Cream Social and our Raingutter Regatta.  Everyone is invited.  It's the last chance for cub scouts to get their awards and achievements for the year announced in front of all the pack.  The Tiger Cub Scouts advance to the Wolf rank, and that is always a fun advancement ceremony.

It is also an opportunity to bring a friend who is thinking of joining the Pack.  His parents can ask questions of the Cubmaster and other leaders, while the boys hang out together.  Boys in Kindergarten are welcome to come to this meeting and then attend the Pack's summer program activities as a Tiger Cub.

After the awards & Tiger Advancements, and announcements about summer program activities, adjourn outside for the ice cream party and Raingutter Regatta.

Raingutter Regatta

The Raingutter Regatta competition will take place at the final Pack meeting and will be held outdoors on the Bridge Point basketball courts (or, if bad weather, under a shade structure).

The rules for the Raingutter Regatta are fairly simple. The boys build boats from kits handed out in the Spring by their den leaders.  Please follow the assembly directions on the package and allow the boys to decorate in any manner they choose.  Although the directions in the package say "no cutting, only sanding", we do not care what tools you use as long as no fingers are lost.

The actual race will be divided into rank categories: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. Each rank group will first race each other. The race will involve sets of two raingutters on saw horses. We have several sets of raingutters ready to speed the races. The boys blow air on the boats to move them through the water. Hands may only be used to upright a turned over boat and may not be used to advance the boat. Boys may not use their faces, lips, hats, nose or other body parts to move the boat -- just their lung power!

Elimination heats will  be run to narrow down the field for each rank. At least double elimination will be used. The final heats from each age group will determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers for that rank. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers in each age group will be in the pack finals.

Trophies will be awarded for speed and for design as follows:

Speed:  1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places for each rank (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos) plus 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for speed in the Pack championships

Design:  Trophies will be awarded to the best designs for each rank. There will be pack level design trophies as well.

Construction rules

  1. The boat must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year. As much as practical, the boat should be substantially built by the Scout with parental supervision. The boat should use every part from the BSA Raingutter Regatta Kit. Additional parts, decals, paint, and glue are permitted.

  2. Overall width shall not exceed 2 1/4 inches.

  3. Overall length from bow to stern (including rudder) shall not exceed 7.00 inches, nor shorter than 6.50 inches.

  4. The mast must be upright and can be no taller than 6.50 inches from the deck surface.

  5. The boat must have a single hull.  Although you might find designs for double hulled boats on the internet, our Pack rules mandate that all boats must be single hull.

  6. The sail may be trimmed and shaped, but may not be larger than the material supplied.

  7. The keel and rudder may be glued anywhere on the boat, but cannot cause the boat to exceed 7.00 inches in overall length.

  8. Details such as figures, decals and paint are permissible as long as these details are securely glued or fastened to the boat. The scouts are encouraged to decorate their boat, as they will also be judged for design, and awards given to the top boats in each rank.

You can add material and items to the boats, but keep in mind that lighter boats will generally be faster.

Race Rules:

1.      Two boys will race against each other at a time.  They will be called based on the number assigned at registration.

2.      Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain gutter.

3.      When the starter says go, the boys will propel the boats by blowing on the sail only.

4.      The boys' hands must be behind their backs at all times, unless the boat turns over or is stuck on the gutter.

5.      The boy may use his hand only to upright his boat or to remove an impediment (i.e. if the boat is stuck on the gutter).  THE BOY MAY NOT ADVANCE THE BOAT WITH HIS HAND AT ANY TIME.

The race manager and race stager on each lane will judge violations.
