Background Pack 39 Cub Scouting is funded with individual scout dues and our annual Fall Popcorn Sale, which pays for all of our annual events and cub scout awards, patches, etc. We do not charge parents & scouts for anything else throughout the year. Each scout is encouraged to participate in the Fall Popcorn Sale. Pack 39 has been #1 in popcorn sales for the Capitol Area Council for several years running. Our sale is highly profitable, and we use part of our profits to fund a cash donation to a several area charities that the Pack selects. Last year we contributed to the Fund to Rebuild Scouting and the Eanes Education Foundation. The Fund to Rebuild Scouting is a Boy Scouts of America fund designed to benefit the Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops that were besieged by Hurricane Katrina. One of our best motivators is our prizes -- we offer our own Pack prizes which are way cooler than those offered by Trail's End or the Capitol Area Council. Butter Flavor Popcorn Concerns and Answers There is an email being distributed on the internet which claims that the artificial butter flavoring used in microwave popcorn poses a danger of lung damage to ordinary customers. It is true that studies have linked the chemical, diacetyl, with the lung disease, bronchiolitis obliterans, in industrial workers who experience significant inhalation exposure to the chemical. In response to those studies, major popcorn manufacturers have begun removing the chemical from their products. Trails End, who manufactures the Boy Scout popcorn, was the first popcorn manufacturer to remove the chemical. Please see their attached notice. We are including in each scouts' popcorn package a flyer that they can share with their customers insuring them that the Boy Scout popcorn does not contain the chemical in question.
